Medication Delivery via Holding Chamber and
Facemask with Inhalation Flow Indicator
The 2008 International Congress on
Pediatric Pulmonology (CIPP) Nice, France, was the organization’s
eighth event. Held every two years, CIPP’s 2006 Congress in Montreal,
Canada, drew delegates from over 78 countries making it a truly
International conference. Trudell Medical International was invited to
present the attached Poster. This study demonstrated that delivery of
inhaled medication to infants and small children by Valved Holding Chamber
(VHC) with facemask may require more than one inhalation to empty the VHC
due to lower tidal volumes. An aid that provides feedback to the healthcare
provider that inhalation has taken place is therefore useful to optimize
medication delivery to these patients.
The Flow-Vu* Inspiratory Flow Indicator (IFI), a key feature
on the AeroChamber Plus* Valved Holding Chamber (VHC), moves
in synchrony with the opening of the valve in response to the patients’
inspiratory effort. By removing the potential for mistakes, the patient is
given the time to take a slow deep breath – helping to ensure the medication
gets where it is needed – in the lungs. This enables parents and caregivers
to confirm a good face/mask seal and count the number of inhalations that
have taken place, thereby optimizing the therapeutic dose.
In this study, each VHC was connected to a breathing simulator set to mimic
infant or small child breathing patterns, depending on facemask size. The
volume of the AeroChamber Plus* VHC with Flow-Vu*
IFI
(149 mL) is the optimal size for a Valved Holding Chamber. For infants and
children with lower tidal volumes the Flow-Vu* Indicator is an
important feature which provides visual assurance to patients, caregivers
and healthcare professionals that inhalation is being performed correctly,
thus confirming that the medication has been delivered.
